Grace in Every Step: Sania Khimji and the Power of Down Syndrome Representation by Ankush Bharti

Sania Khimji is breaking boundaries and challenging conventional beauty norms in India’s fashion world. Living with Down Syndrome, she has emerged as a powerful symbol of inclusion and determination.

She is a multifaceted artist, model, and influencer whose creative journey knows no bounds. With a vibrant portfolio that spans across continents, she has showcased and sold her artwork on global platforms, leaving an indelible mark in the international art scene. Her innovative spirit earned her a prestigious patent in Mumbai, a testament to her originality and vision.

From collaborating with renowned national and international brands to gracing campaigns with her striking presence, she effortlessly blends art and influence. Her achievements are many, and the journey is far from over — she continues to inspire through every canvas, camera frame, and creative endeavor.

Crowned Miss India in the special needs category in 2023, Sania's story goes far beyond titles — it's a testament to her self-taught skills in art, dance, and makeup. Hailing from Karnataka, she’s turned her passion into a platform for change.

“Style is for everyone — when I walk the ramp, I walk for every girl who’s ever been told she can’t,” says Sania with a smile full of courage.

Here is an exclusive conversation with her:

1. Can you share your journey into the fashion world and what inspired you to pursue this path?

1.I participated in a couple of pageants for Special Needs and won them. Ramp walk came very naturally to me, and I love being on stage.

2. How would you define your personal style, and how does it reflect your personality and experiences?

My personal style is what suits my body type and what looks good on me.

3. Were there any particular fashion icons or role models who inspired you along the way? How did they influence your choices?

Bollywood celebrities and their fashion sense have inspired me.

4. What is your everyday routine?

I work out or play a sport every day, dance, study, and attend other classes that help in my overall development.

5. What is fashion according to you?

Fashion is a form of self-expression.

6. Can you describe your creative process when designing outfits or selecting looks? What inspires your choices?

I usually pick what suits my body type and my personality.

7. How do you use your platform to advocate for people with disabilities and promote positive representation in fashion

I was the first Down syndrome model in India, paving the way for others. I use my social media to showcase my achievements and promote inclusivity.

8. What are your hobbies?

Dancing, singing, and cooking.

9. What advice would you give to young individuals with disabilities who aspire to work in fashion or any creative field?

It’s not an easy journey, but keep trying.

10. What are your dreams for the future in the fashion industry? Are there any projects or initiatives you’re excited about?

I want to be able to walk for the biggest Indian and international fashion weeks. The project I’m excited about is being a judge for a pageant in Goa this April.
