Birth and Education: Sapkal was born on November 14,1948 to a cow-herder named Abhimanyu Sathe in the village of Pimpri Meghe in the Wardha district of the previously known Central Provinces and Berar of India. She was referred to as Chindhi since she was an undesired child (Marathi for "piece of rag"). Despite her mother's protests, her father was determined to get Sindhutai an education.
