Although the term "K-pop" can be used to describe any popular or pop music from South Korea, it is frequently used generally to refer to any Korean music and artists connected to the nation's entertainment and idol industries, regardless of genre.

Unlike other musical genres, contemporary K-pop can be traced back to a specific day: April 11, 1992, the day Seo Taiji and Boys debuted their music on television. Due to their striking resemblance to current Kpop groups, Seo Taiji and Boys are regarded as Korea's original Kpop group.
