Novena to St Anthony of Padua Starts at Sacred Heart Church, Mattannur in Kannur, Kerala




Novena to St Anthony of Padua begins at Sacred Heart Church, Mattannur, Kannur, Kerala, India, on 21 November 2023.

The novena was announced by the parish priest Rev. Fr. Benny Putharayil on the 12th of November during the Sunday Mass. On 19th November, Sunday, he blessed the statue of St Anthony of Padua in a solemn ceremony.

On the day of the start of the Novena, parish members and Catholics from the nearby area visited the church. Sacred Heart Parish is a small parish in the Kannur Diocese with just under 30 families. 

St Anthony of Padua is a renowned saint of the Catholic Tradition. He is also known as the Wonderworker and the patron saint of lost and stolen articles. He is one of the most popular of the Catholic saints. He was part of the Franciscan order. St Anthony was born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal. He was given the name of Fernando at Baptism. Later, when he joined the Franciscan order he took the name of the renowned St Anthony of Egypt.

The church services usually take place at 6.45 am on ordinary days. Owing to the start of the novena, on all Tuesdays, the morning service is shifted to 5.30 pm. This change came into effect on 21 November. 

Sacred Heart Church is located in Mattannur, a small municipality in Kannur district of Kerala, near the Kannur Airport. Many parishioners commented that the starting of the novena to St Anthony of Padua is a miraculous intervention in itself bringing many souls back to the church, making the church a hub of spiritual revival in the area.
