Revival of Hindi Cinema?

The long week from 12th-15th August seems to have brought a fresh lease of life to Hindi cinema. One can’t remember the last time two Hindi movies took the country by storm. Akshay Kumar finally gets a pan India hit. The director, Amit Rai, got the formula right. Religion has a strong influence on Indian society. Add it up with the talent of Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, viewers are drawn to the theatres.

Box office collection in the first 6 days in India is 83 crores. There are strong signals that the momentum will carry forward to the coming weekend- we have a blockbuster.

The hype around Gadar 2 had cinema pundits worried. Sequels rarely do well. The expectations are high, and there is always a comparison with part one. Sunny paaji doesn’t disappoint his fans. He is back to his ferocious best. His fans have missed him. The timing of the release, close to Independence Day, was smart marketing. Box office collections in India after day 6 is 260 crores.

This is good news for the Bollywood industry. The last movie to make waves was Pathaan. The movie had its share of controversy, with calls for boycott. But the public defied the call as they were hungry for a film that keeps them engaged for three hours. Gadar 2 and OMG 2 have ridden the wave of success so far without any political, religious, or social media drama.

Well done. ‘Gadar’ performance.
